I developed On Deck as a monthly email with the goal of raising awareness of the monthly refresh of Landor.com. The email was created with images and writing from the monthly web page refresh; it only added a few hours to the entire team’s monthly workload. The email was kept intentionally brief and simple, to accommodate a variety of mobile devices and legacy corporate email systems.
The header graphic combined an evergreen logo lockup with the month’s feature story image in a small space. All information was presented as plaintext, allowing the design to degrade gracefully in case the image was lost. (Some corporate email systems block images, some drop images on fowards, and many users were on BlackBerry devices that didn’t handle images well.) On Deck increased traffic to Landor.com, and On Deck subscriptions quadrupled in its first year.
